Contract Manufacturing Isn’t a Commodity, And Your Parts Shouldn’t Be Treated Like One

Here at Reata, we’ve seen some companies emerge with the idea to make sourcing parts feel as transactional as possible. Upload a model, get a quote, receive a part. On the surface, that sounds simple. 

But here’s the reality: contract manufacturing, especially for critical industries, isn’t simple. Behind every machined component are dozens of decisions involving tolerances, material selection, machining processes, finishes, inspection requirements, supply chain coordination… the list goes on. 

And when something doesn’t go completely according to plan, as is inevitable in a fast-moving industry like ours, it’s important to have a true manufacturing partner standing beside you to solve the problem.

If you asked most aerospace, medical, defense, or semiconductor manufacturers whether their products are “commodity products,” the answer would almost certainly be no. Their products are engineered with precision. Their tolerances are critical. Their requirements are nuanced and complex.

Reata currently produces components that we’ve been manufacturing for over two decades. Over that time, these customers change facilities, suppliers, assembly locations, or internal teams, but our deep-rooted knowledge of the product’s history helps us maintain continuity. 

Recently, one long-running medical product transitioned between multiple facilities across the country. During this transition, questions came up about assembly requirements and part configurations. Because of our history with the product, however, we were able to help clarify details to fill in knowledge gaps. 

That level of support only happens with a manufacturing partner who prioritizes long-term relationships rather than checking boxes in short-term transactions.
