A Workforce Development Strategy That Works: Internal Lunch-and-Learns

Lunch-and-Learns

At Reata, we believe high-performing manufacturing teams aren’t built by accident. They’re fostered through clarity, communication, continuous improvement, and ongoing workforce development.

One of the most impactful ways we support our team is through monthly lunch-and-learns. We provide lunch and gather the entire company, from machinists to front office staff. Then we dive into topics that matter to our business and to their personal and professional growth.

These meetings aren’t surface-level updates. They’re intentional conversations designed to help our team understand how the business runs, why certain decisions are made, and how each individual contributes to our success as a contract manufacturing partner.

Providing Lunch-and-Learns: Our “Why”

We often encourage our team to “own their square feet.” Everyone owns a piece of the company in their own way. When individuals understand how their work contributes to delivery, quality assurance, engineering efficiency, and overall performance, they make slightly better decisions. Over time, those small improvements compound into significant gains.

Transparency Isn’t Just Important for External Partners

Transparency is one of our core initiatives. Externally, we’ve invested in tools like our customer portal and other clear communication systems so our partners have visibility into their projects. But transparency doesn’t stop at the customer level; it starts internally.

During our lunch-and-learn sessions, we cover topics such as:

  • How the business makes money
  • How revenue flows through the company
  • Key performance indicators
  • Operational metrics that drive success

We share meaningful insights into how the company performs and what drives profitability. And best of all, every team member is invited, and everyone who wants to learn (and enjoy a free lunch!) can attend.

When people understand how the business succeeds, they begin to see how their daily decisions impact outcomes. That awareness builds ownership.

Expanding Skills Beyond the Shop Floor

Not every lunch-and-learn focuses on financial transparency. We also host sessions centered on professional development and personal growth.

Most members of our leadership team are required to create and host a lunch-and-learn each year. They choose a topic (and a lunch menu) that makes the sessions engaging and personal.

Topics have included:

  • How to use new manufacturing software systems
  • ERP and workflow optimization tools
  • AI tools that support quoting, scheduling, and data analysis
  • Negotiation and communication tactics

Some sessions cover skills that apply both inside and outside the workplace. For example, a negotiation-focused lunch-and-learn explored how our people can negotiate in their personal lives, such as negotiating rent, as well as in their jobs, such as working through service contracts.

These sessions reflect our belief in continuous learning. Whether it’s mastering a new system, understanding artificial intelligence in manufacturing, tinkering around with the software that drives our precision machining operations, or improving communication skills, we are committed to scaling up our team.

Breaking Down Silos

In many machine shop environments, there’s a divide between the shop floor and the front office. At Reata, lunch-and-learns eliminate that separation.

Machinists, engineers, quality specialists, and administrative staff sit side by side. It’s a supportive, collaborative environment in which everyone learns together and contributes.

For team members who rarely step away from their machines, this time is especially valuable. It allows them to see the broader impact of their work and gain perspective on how the entire operation functions, all while building new, valuable skills.

How Our Customers Benefit

When partnering with a precision machine shop, you want more than capable machines and advanced software solutions; you want capable people. You want a team that understands risk management, quality, delivery timelines, and customer expectations at every level.

Our lunch-and-learns help ensure that everyone, from top to bottom, understands what it takes for the company to be successful. Because more skilled team members mean better decision-making. Better decision-making means stronger execution. And stronger execution means more reliable outcomes for your parts.

At Reata, investing in our people isn’t optional. It’s part of how we deliver consistent, high-quality manufacturing services and how we continue building a company our team and our customers are proud to partner with.
