How Our New Scanning CMM Improves Inspection Capabilities

Reata Engineering recently welcomed our first scanning coordinate measuring machine (CMM) into our precision machine shop. 

We installed the Hexagon GLOBAL S CMM to replace an older piece of CMM equipment, dramatically improving our precision machining measurement capabilities. 

So, how is this new scanning CMM different from our old CMM? 

While our last machine took 3-4 data points per inch, this one takes 1,000+ data points per inch! 

This incredible improvement in measurement capability brings our inspection accuracy to a whole new level, which is especially important when working on the complex CNC machining projects we love so much. 

Benefits of Our New Scanning CMM 

The GLOBAL S CMM combines smart measurement and automation technologies to enhance the accuracy and speed of our inspection processes. These improvements help us better serve our contract machining customers. 

Superior performance 

Parts with complex geometries and tight tolerances demand advanced inspection technology.

Our scanning CMM enables us to measure high-precision parts with a high degree of accuracy and identify structural anomalies like warping, twisting, or surface finish issues. It also helps us reverse engineer parts when necessary. 

Enhanced productivity 

The scanning CMM is optimized for efficiency to ensure that our precision machine shop’s meticulous inspection processes never contribute to delayed schedules.

Outfitted with a tool changer, this machine can run uninterrupted with minimal human intervention, reducing inspection times and freeing up our inspectors to focus on other important tasks that keep projects moving.

Improved data analysis

The scanning CMM yields a wealth of actionable data, allowing us to examine and analyze parts more closely than before. With this technology in place, we can ensure the parts we make are of the highest quality and that all critical specifications are met. 

Our quality department also leverages this data for statistical analysis, which informs timely decisions on the busy shop floor.
